  • In the West Bengal fake passport case, the detective department of the Kolkata Police submitted a 140-page chargesheet on Thursday to an Alipore court.

The chargesheet names 130 persons, including those of 120 Bangladesh nationals, for allegedly obtaining Indian passports using fake documents. Sources said all 120 of the Bangladesh nationals are absconding.

The accused persons have been booked on charges of cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker, merchant or agent, and criminal conspiracy along with charges under the Passport Act and Foreigners Act.

The chargesheet mentions that 10 of the 130 accused have been arrested. Of them, eight are in judicial custody till March 17, while two have been granted bail.

Sources said that in the chargesheet, the name of former SI Abdul Hai and the names of Samaresh Biswas, his son Ripan Biswas, Dipankar Das, Manoj Gupta and Dipak Mondal have been mentioned — all of whom were earlier arrested.

Hai was formerly associated with the Security Control department of the Kolkata Police. He was allegedly the inquiry officer for 52 out of the 150 fake passports. As a result, he knew many of the gang members, police sources said. Hai allegedly used to charge Rs 25,000 per passport. Police sources said that Hai was associated with Samaresh Biswas — the key accused in the case.

In November 2024, the case was registered at the Bhowanipore Police Station based on a complaint filed by a cop from the Security Control Organisation (SCO). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the matter.
