  • 123 Siliguri: Two persons were arrested on Sunday for threatening the deputy mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation a day earlier. The accused were identified as Dibendu Das and Vijay Sharma.

Deputy mayor Ranjan Sarkar said his car had been stopped on Hill Cart Road on Saturday. "Around 4pm, I was on my way to a private nursing home with one of my relatives after getting the news that my sister's mother-in-law had died. My car was passing through Hill Cart Road when a group of men stopped my vehicle, shouted abuses and climbed up on the bonnet. Some said they were from Bihar, while the others were locals. I stepped out of the vehicle and asked them to let me go on my way. They got agitated and said ‘maar du kya' — a threat to kill me. I got back in the car and somehow managed to leave the area," said Sarkar. He added that his personal security officer had been on leave.

Sarkar filed a complaint at Siliguri police station on Sunday. Asserting that hooliganism would not be tolerated in Siliguri, he said: "It is a shame if we cannot walk in our own home. People come from outside the state and create a nuisance. Police will look into the matter administratively; we will look into it politically."

"Two persons have been arrested and will be produced in court on Monday. An investigation has begun to determine the exact sequence of events and find the others involved," said a police officer.

According to sources, the two accused later visited Trinamool's office in Ward 4 on Sunday and expressed remorse for their actions.
