  • 123456 Kolkata: Following feedback from residents that some of the playgrounds and activity parks in New Town are not receiving proper maintenance, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has initiated the process to appoint agencies to look after the year-round maintenance and upkeep of many parks and playgrounds in the township for the next two years.

NKDA maintains a number of parks which include New Town AE Park, CE Park, CB Park, DB Park, Action Area IIB, IIC and IID parks. There are also some activity parks like Sonar Kella Park, Apur Sansar Park, and Professor Shanku Park. While some of the parks were well maintained by the authorities, residents said that the condition of a few parks is deteriorating due to a lack of regular maintenance.

"Initially, Apur Sansar Park used to be well maintained, but lately there seems to be some lack in maintenance as not only snakes but mosquito larvae could also be seen in the small waterbody inside as larvicide is not sprayed. The toilet is also shut. The authorities should look into the issue," said Shoumyadip Maity, secretary of New Town BC Block welfare association.

"There are some parks and green verges which are maintained on a regular basis, but there are also a number of parks which are not getting proper maintenance with weeds growing up. The authorities should look into the issue," said New Town BE Block resident Pulak De.

The parks identified so far for agencies to take up regular maintenance of arboriculture are Professor Shanku Park, the activity and playground at AA II, Action Area IID Park, the biodiversity park at AC Block, the triangular CE Block Park, the smart plaza adjacent to Biswa Bangla Gate, and other such green open spaces. NKDA has initiated the process to engage agencies for upkeeping arboriculture of the parks.

"There was feedback coming from residents that some of the parks and playgrounds were not receiving proper maintenance. The authorities' move to engage agencies for year-round maintenance of arboriculture of different parks will help in this regard," said Samaresh Das, a resident of New Town CB Block.

NKDA tried to come up with innovative ideas to increase the green cover in New Town. Some years back, the authorities converted small rubbish heaps into green zones by developing micro gardens, which earlier used to be waste dumping grounds.
