QS Ranking: JU improves in engg-tech and chem, slips in arts-humanities

1234 Kolkata: After a gap of four years, Jadavpur University's engineering and technology dept has secured a place in the QS World University Ranking by Subject this year. The department of chemistry improved its position compared to last year's, while the ranking dropped in the arts and humanities compared to its ranking in 2022.
At least among 45 universities named across India, Jadavpur University has ranked 21st globally in the band of 721-730, improving its 2024 performance, where it ranked in the range of 741-750.
In 2023, JU stood 37th among all Indian universities with a ranking of 1,031, which slightly improved last year. The engineering and technology department in 2025 ranked between 451 and 500 and regained its position this time, as in the last four years since 2021, it was not on the list. The mathematics dept also secured its position on the rank list with a world ranking between 451 and 500.
The chemistry dept improved its position and ranked between 351 and 400 compared to 401-450 in 2024. English language and literature, engineering – chemical, physics and astronomy and computer and information systems maintained their positions achieved in 2024. However, in arts and humanities, there is a fall compared to the 2022 ranking. In 2022, they scored between 401 and 450, but in 2025, their position is between 501 and 550. However, in 2023 and 2024, they were not on the rank list.
JU interim VC Bhaskar Gupta said, "We have been able to hold on to our position and have also improved in certain subject areas. It is a proud moment that as a state-funded university, our performance is remarkable not only in the state but also in the country despite an acute funds crunch."
Pro-VC Amitava Datta, who is a senior professor of the engineering faculty, said, "This reflects the high level of academics and research at JU. The high marks scored by JU in citation indicates quality research by JU faculty and scholars."
