  • 12 Kolkata: Hours before CM Mamata Banerjee's visit, Pradesh Congress netas on Monday went to Furfura Sharif to offer prayers on the death anniversary of Mohammad Abu Bakr Siddiqui. Bengal Congress minder Ghulam Ahmad Mir was also present.

"Bengal Congress has a long association with Furfura Sharif, and leaders like Ghani Khan Choudhury maintained very cordial ties with the clerics there," said a Congress neta.

Former Bengal Congress chief Adhir Chowdhury said Mir's visit was that of a devotee. "Furfura Sharif is a holy place to thousands. Congress members have gone there on invitation. They can even attend without an invitation. The Bengal minder of Congress, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, is a resident of Kashmir and has heard about the place. He has gone there to visit the shrine," he said. "However, the CM's visit is with an aim to gain political mileage before the assembly polls," he added.
