  • Kolkata: Brace for a few spells of thunderstorm activities between Thursday and Saturday in Kolkata. The Met office has issued a yellow warning for Kolkata, where the showers are expected to be accompanied by gusty wind. The thunderstorm in some southern districts is likely to be more intense as an orange warning has been issued for those districts. The showers will tame the rising mercury.

"Due to the presence of a favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels, thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty surface wind are very likely to occur in some districts of West Bengal during March 20-22," said a special bulletin from the IMD.

Even as the maximum temperature was slightly below normal in the past two days, the minimum temperature was above normal for 10 consecutive days. "The chances of rain in Kolkata are high between Thursday and Saturday. While it is a yellow warning for the city as of now, the dynamics in thundershower forecasts change, unlike the prediction of monsoon rain. We will keep updating on any change as and when we detect it," said Sourish Bandyopadhyay, weather scientist at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.
