Municipalities job scam: HC refuses to grant Sil bail

12 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to grant bail to Ayan Sil in the multi-crore municipalities recruitment case, stating that given the gravity of the offence, "it will send a wrong signal to society."
The HC also noted that releasing him on bail was likely to derail the probe. The division bench of justices Debangsu Basak and Smita Das De heard the bail plea. Sil had already been granted bail in the cash-for-school jobs case.
Sil's counsel submitted that out of 17 municipalities in the case, the investigating agency submitted a charge sheet in only one. It was highlighted that he was in custody for over 11 months without the possibility of the trial commencing in the near future.
The deputy solicitor general, appearing for CBI, submitted that the investigations were ongoing.
He submitted there were sufficient materials on record to implicate Sil and pointed out that CBI seized OMRs of persons who received illegal appointments.
Sil was arrested by ED in the school jobs case in March 2023. He was later arrested by both ED and CBI in the municipalities recruitment irregularities case.
