  • Kolkata: Sauptik Chandra, a second-year civil engineering student arrested in connection with the arson at the Trinamool-supported ‘Shiksha Bandhu' office on campus on March 1, was sent to police custody until March 25 as the magistrate turned down his bail plea on Wednesday. "We have enough evidence of his direct involvement in the arson case. We have his photographs at the site, witness statements confirming his presence, and the other youth arrested in the case named him in his confessional statement," said Sourin Ghoshal, the state counsel. Chandra's lawyer Debasis Pal, furnishing a letter from the JU civil engineering HoD, said, "He is not going to flee. He was arrested only after he complied with the notice and turned up at the PS, and will comply with any further conditions if granted bail. He has his exams on Thursday. If he misses it, his career may be hampered."

Meanwhile, CP Manoj Verma said many have been summoned for questioning in connection with the case but they are not calling more than two per day.
