  • 12 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to implement the Rs 333-crore project to set up a water distribution network, underground reservoirs and overhead tanks in Rajarhat-Gopalpur, covering BMC wards 1 to 21, to supply surface-treated water. Officials said the project, expected to be completed in two years, will benefit close to 3.2 lakh people.

According to civic officials, BMC wards 1 to 21, which covers areas surrounding the airport, Kaikhali, Baguiati, Tegharia and parts of Kestopur, do not have overhead tanks or a distribution network for supplying filtered water. The areas mostly dependent on underground water.

"There will be 14 overhead tanks, four underground reservoirs and a new distribution network line for supplying filtered water. A work order has been issued to Mackintosh Burn for developing the infrastructure," said BMC MMiC Debraj Chakraborty. The project is being funded by the Centre's AMRUT scheme.

"The water that is being supplied now has high iron content. We hope to get filtered water soon," said Kaustav Dey, a resident of a multi-storied high-rise apartment close to Chinar Park.
