  • 12 Kolkata: The city remained under partial cloud cover on Thursday morning, which provided slight relief from the scorching heat of the last few days. While the maximum temperature slid to 32°C, the minimum was 26.6°C. With conditions turning favourable for a thunderstorm on Friday and Saturday, more relief is round the corner, said the Met office on Thursday. The city could be lashed by a squall on Friday.

Wind flow at the lower levels of the atmosphere and moisture incursion from the sea have combined to make conditions favourable for a squall in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts, according to Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist HR Biswas. "Some western districts like Bankura and Purulia received thunderstorms on Thursday. Some south Bengal districts, too, received light rain and had a cloud cover on Thursday. remained partially cloudy on Thursday. But we expect a full-fledged thunderstorm, which may turn into a squall with a wind speed of around 50 km/hour. The chances of a thunderstorm remain equally strong on both Friday and Saturday," added Biswas.

Several south Bengal districts, too, could be lashed by thunderstorms over the next 48 hours. The city received a cool breeze and a light drizzle late on Thursday evening which brought further relief at the end of the day.
