123 Kolkata: The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association has opposed the setting up of a police outpost on the campus. This follows a communication from Kolkata Police last week, where they sought space from university authorities to set up a police outpost.
JUTA cited that "such unwarranted intervention of police is an attempt to infringe the autonomous character of a university". The association requested the authority to "initiate appropriate action to uphold the institutional autonomy".
The teachers' body organised a meeting on Thursday, where most of the teachers spoke against the police outpost. They felt that the university must be strict in enforcing discipline and strengthening internal security to tackle unwanted incidents. In a letter to the interim VC, JUTA stated that they "firmly reiterate their standpoint to oppose the installation of a police outpost or barrack on the campus for the restoration and sustenance of normalcy."
