CP balm for traffic cops on duty in scorching heat

Kolkata: To ease the burden on traffic constables amid rising temperatures, Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma on Wednesday slashed duty hours from eight to six, effective immediately. Verma also distributed summer kits to traffic cops at key intersections.
"The day-time temperature is hovering between 37°C and 38°C. Even in the evening, it is not dropping below 25°C. The high humidity is making it extremely uncomfortable for traffic personnel. Hence, constables will not work in shifts longer than six hours," Verma said.
Addressing concerns about managing the workload with reduced hours, Verma said additional manpower from the reserve force will be deployed. Kolkata Traffic Police, which typically operates in three shifts, will now shift to a four-shift schedule. "We want to ensure that our personnel remain safe and fit throughout this gruelling summer," Verma added.
The special summer kits being distributed among 5,578 traffic police personnel include ORS, water bottles, umbrellas and sunglasses. Additionally, earthen water pots have been placed at beat posts and traffic outposts. The personnel have also been allowed to skip leather bracelets and anklets in summer.
The distribution drive began at Park Circus, where Verma handed over kits to over 30 personnel. He then visited key locations like Shyambazar, Bhowanipore, and Pragati Maidan.
An officer said while this is an annual initiative, this year, it has started earlier due to the current high temperatures.
