Kolkata: A Barasat district court on Thursday gave life imprisonment to seven persons for the murder of TMC panchayat samiti candidate Biplab Sarkar inside a party office in Habra during the 2018 panchayat elections.
Public prosecutor Shyamal Kanti Dutta stated that, in addition to life imprisonment, judge Gargi Chattopadhyay Hossain's court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict. Failure to pay would result in an additional six months in prison. One of the accused, Sujit Das, is on the run.
According to sources, Sarkar was inside a party office with some workers when a group of armed miscreants stormed in and opened fire at him. He was killed on the spot, while Trinamool legal cell's Anup Das sustained injuries in the attack.
Defence lawyer Dulal Sarkar said they would move the high court against this sentence.
