  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday dismissed a PIL, seeking the court's directive to remove a construction encroaching on the pavement near B P Poddar Hospital, New Alipore.

This was a feature all over the city, observed Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam. Addressing the counsel for the petitioner, Anindya Lahiri, the CJ said, "Mr Lahiri, you first file a petition on encroachments in and around the high court... Some fellow is selling green salad, some have set up a kachori shop and another is selling stationery items."

The counsel submitted that pavements should not be allowed to be encroached on. "Look at the entrance of the HC in the stadium area. Advocates park their cars on the footpath. All the staff have to walk on the road from the ferry ghat to come to the high court," the Chief Justice said.
