  • Just before leaving for the United Kingdom on a seven-day visit, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned the Opposition on Thursday not to insult “mother Bengal”.

“We do not humiliate them. But it is most unfortunate that there are some ganashatru (anti-social) elements, especially in our state. In our country also. They are playing some dirty game through WhatsApp and email,” Banerjee said during a press conference at Nabanna.

“These messages have reached us from abroad as well. Do our adversaries think we have no connections outside India? Maligning Bengal’s reputation will not be tolerated. You can insult me if you wish, but do not insult mother Bengal,” she said.

Asked about reports that some people are planning to protest against her in London during her visit, Banerjee said, “Everyone has the right to protest. It is their democratic right. It will increase my publicity. I have no problem.”

She then added, “You can insult me but don’t try to insult Bengal abroad.”
