  • 123 Kolkata: The city woke up to a grey sky and persistent drizzles, even as the maximum temperature dropped nine notches below normal to 25.5°C on Saturday. A sharp, chilly wind accompanied the rain that started late on Friday evening and resumed early on Saturday morning. It was not until early afternoon that the drizzles ceased, though the sky remained overcast for the rest of the day. Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 21.1°C and received 2.1 mm of rain during the day.

The Met office predicted clouds and rain across most parts of south Bengal until Sunday. A thunderstorm with gusty wind up to a speed of 50-60 km/hr struck at one or two places over Jhargram, West and East Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, and West Burdwan districts on Saturday. The rest of the south Bengal districts also received thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by light to moderate rain.

Thunderstorms with lightning, along with light to moderate rain, are likely to continue across the same places on Sunday. "Due to the presence of a favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels, thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty surface wind are very likely to occur in some districts of West Bengal during March 22-23, 2025," said a bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre .

"It could continue to remain cloudy and windy on Sunday, even as scattered rain and thunderstorms strike various parts of south Bengal. Kolkata, too, could receive intermittent rain, but the chances of an intense shower are ruled out," said H R Biswas, a weather scientist at RMC.
