  • 12 Kolkata: A 40-year-old woman, crossing the tracks on the rail bridge at Dakshindari in Lake Town on Friday morning, died as she jumped off, fearing she would be crushed between two trains approaching from opposite sides. But, witnesses said, neither of the trains was on the tracks she was stranded on— one passed her from front and the other from behind.

Sushma Prasad, a resident of Nehru Colony, saw the train coming on the tracks in front but on hearing the horn of the train behind, she mistook it for running on the same tracks she was walking on.

The incident took place around 7 am, when Sushma and her husband, Vikas, were crossing the bridge. As they reached the Dakshindari rail bridge No. 5, a train approached on the second pair of tracks. Sushma jumped through a gap on the bridge, falling onto the road below. She was taken to RG Kar, where she was declared dead.
