  • 123456 Kolkata: An employee at an MNC in Salt Lake, Soumen Paul (30), was crushed to death on Jessore Road as a dumper rammed into the scooter he was riding, with his wife and three-year-old son sitting pillion, on Friday night. The truck dragged his body for nearly 300 m before it came to a halt.

This was the fifth fatal accident on Jessore Road since Feb 16.

The wife, Sushmita, and child, Souradeep, are battling for their lives at a private hospital off Bypass.

The three were returning home at Shibachal, Birati, when the accident took place in front of a shopping mall near Madhyamgram Chowmatha. "Going recklessly, the dumper driver crashed into the scooter from behind, throwing all three to the road. The woman and the child fell to the left side of the road, while Soumen fell to the right. The dumper driver did not stop and his vehicle dragged Soumen nearly 300m ahead, till locals forced him to stop," said Kishore Sengupta, a trader. The driver fled. A Barasat district police officer claimed, "The locals tried but the dumper driver sped away. Madhyamgram Traffic Police stopped the truck and arrested the driver."

The accident prompted protests against frequent accidents on Jessore Road. Since Feb 16, at least seven people have died in five accidents on Jessore Road. "Various steps have been introduced to curb reckless driving. Strict action is being taken against offenders," a traffic officer said.
