  • 123 Kolkata: Sandhya Rani Mondal, the only CPM councillor of North Dum Dum Municipality, has joined Trinamool on Sunday. This shift has now rendered North Dum Dum Municipality completely opposition-free — a significant political development ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Sandhya Rani said although CPM nominated her for the municipal elections and helped her become an elected representative, she faced multiple obstacles from the party when it came to discharging her duties. "Frustrated by these constraints, I decided to switch to Trinamool. I'm optimistic that now, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, I will be able to work for the people and implement various welfare schemes," she said.

In the 2022 municipal elections, Trinamool secured victory in 33 out of 34 wards in North Dum Dum Municipality. The only exception was Ward No. 15, where Mondal won for CPM and served as councillor for 3 years.

On Sunday, she joined Trinamool, accepting the party flag from North Dum Dum Municipality Chairman Bidhan Biswas and Dum Dum North MLA, minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.

Bhattacharya said, "She(Mondal) had requested to join our party and had written a letter to the CM. With her approval, we have inducted the CPM councillor into our party. Now, the North Dum Dum Municipality is opposition-free."
