  • 12 Howrah: After going dry for three days, entire north Howrah and parts of Liluah started receiving usual water supply from Sunday evening. Since early morning, 52 water tankers were dispatched to affected areas to tackle the situation.

Earlier, Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) convened an emergency meeting with senior officials in view of the water crisis that was triggered by the land subsidence at Belgachhia landfill.

On Friday morning, during a repair work, the damage happened to the pipeline. As a result, water supply to large parts of Howrah, including Liluah, Belgachhia, C Road, and B Road, was hit. Several areas under Shibpur Assembly constituency were also affected. A similar incident had occurred at the landfill on Thursday.

According to the civic body, cracks developed on the pipeline due to the weight of the accumulated garbage. Residents blame years of mismanagement and lack of oversight, leading to repeated disasters.

The administration also reached out to the Uttarpara Municipality in Hooghly to arrange extra water. The collapse also caused structural damage to several houses, with visible cracks appearing on the buildings. "Residents were instructed to shift to safer locations. and many began relocating with their belongings. Additionally, several electric poles were destabilised," an official said. The civic body will probe into the matter.
