Kolkata: A dispute over parking bicycles on a narrow lane turned into horror when a man's eye was allegedly gouged out by a group of youths at New Barrackpore on Monday afternoon. One person has so far been arrested.
The victim, identified as Nandi Biswas, in his mid-40s, was hospitalised, and his family claimed that he lost vision in the left eye. Police launched a probe and arrested one person in connection with the case.
According to locals, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Leningarh area when a group of local youths were chatting at a nearby ground after parking their cycles on the narrow lane adjacent to the ground.
"The altercation started over bicycles parked at the entrance of the alley where Biswas family's house is located. When Biswas protested against this, a group of locals got into an argument with him. The dispute turned violent, and he was brutally assaulted. He was even struck hard in the eye, causing severe damage, almost dislodging it," said Sabita Biswas, a neighbour.
Upon learning about the attack, his family members rushed to the spot and found him in critical condition, bleeding profusely from his left eye. He was immediately taken to Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he underwent surgery. According to his family, he permanently lost vision in that eye. They also alleged that family members were assaulted by the accused during the incident and even when they went to file a complaint at the New Barrackpore police station.
"We started an investigation and already arrested one person, while efforts are on to track down the other accused involved in the attack," a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate said.
