Chandipur: Rabindranath Bari (44), an ASI of Haldia police station, and his relative, Somnath Pramanik (22), a third-year homeopathy student at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital were killed in an accident late on Sunday on the Digha-Nandakumar 116B NH in East Midnapore.
According to police sources, the accident occurred when a private car collided head-on with a truck travelling towards Digha while descending from the Mograjpur rail overbridge. Both victims were trapped inside the mangled vehicle, and despite efforts by locals, they could not be rescued.
Rabindranath had attended an event at his in-laws' home in Narghat on Sunday. Accompanied by Somnath, he was driving back from Chandipur to Narghat when he lost control of the car while descending from the overbridge at high speed, leading to the fatal collision.
Chandipur police rushed to the scene and extracted the victims from the wreckage before sending them to Tamralipta District Hospital. Doctors declared Rabindranath dead on arrival, while Somnath, who was in critical condition, was referred to Kolkata for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.
