Kolkata: Jadavpur University's interim vice-chancellor Bhaskar Gupta wrote to the state higher education department, informing them that as a professor of the electronics and telecommunication engineering department, his retirement was due on March 31. He reportedly expressed concerns over his retirement and sought clarification on the further course of action as an authorised VC.
"I wrote to Bikash Bhavan, telling them I would retire as an electronics and telecommunication professor on March 31. As a professor of the department, I was given the charge of an authorised VC. But as my professorship will end on March 31, how far will it be valid to continue as the interim VC?" said Gupta.
The interim VC said he could not directly write to the governor-chancellor, C V Ananda Bose, as all communications should go through Bikash Bhavan. "I have intimated Bikash Bhavan. It is up to them now," he added.
Gupta was appointed as JU's interim VC on April 22, 2024. Chancellor Bose selected him from the list of state VC nominees.
Ever since Suranjan Das retired in 2023, JU is yet to get a permanent VC. Now, 19 out of 36 state universities have permanent VCs.
Teachers fear there would be a "deadlock condition" after Gupta's retirement on March 31. JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Ray said, "It is an attempt from all sides to destroy the university. JU has not had a permanent VC for two years. The interim VC's retirement as a professor is on March 31. EC meetings and appointments of permanent officials, like the registrar and the finance officer, have been pending."
