12 Kolkata: A man in his early 40s stabbed his wife to death before attempting to take his own life at Gopalnagar in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday afternoon after she left him for her paramour.
Sukhdeb Biswas, armed with a sharp weapon, sneaked into the house of his wife Dipu's lover, Ratan Mondal, in Harishpur, where Dipu was watching TV alone. "He attacked her from behind, stabbing her repeatedly before she could react or defend herself. Then, he turned the weapon on himself, stabbing his stomach at least twice in an attempt to end his life. Hearing the commotion, locals rushed to the spot and took both to Bongaon Subdivisional Hospital, where Dipu was declared dead. Biswas, still battling for his life, has been shifted to Barasat Medical College and Hospital," said Namita Mondal, the sister-in-law of Ratan Mondal.
Sources said Biswas, a garment trader and a resident of Railway Gate No. 17 in Gopalnagar, was married to Dipu for nearly a decade, and the couple has two children.
"Dipu was in an extramarital relationship with Ratan, a neighbouring youth, for the past few months. When the affair came to light, frequent quarrels broke out between the couple. Eventually, Dipu left Biswas and moved in with Ratan, leaving their two children behind. Biswas tried to bring her back several times, but she refused. Enraged, he stormed into her lover's house and attacked her fatally before attempting to kill himself," a senior police officer said.
Police have initiated a murder case and are investigating the incident.
