Jalpaiguri: A Bangladeshi citizen was deported from Changrabandha in Cooch Behar on Tuesday after he allegedly made disparaging comments against India shortly after his arrival.
Mohammad Azadur Rahman of Hazipur in Bangladesh's Magura district had entered India through the Changrabandha immigration check post with a single-entry miscellaneous visa to take his son, a student at an educational institution here, home.
Upon arrival, Rahman boarded an e-rickshaw to head for the local market. On the way, he made adverse comments about India, leading to an argument with the e-rickshaw driver. Soon, more e-rickshaw drivers and locals gathered and demanded an apology from Rahman. As the situation escalated, the police arrived and took Rahman to the Mekhliganj PS. However, a crowd gathered in front of the police station, demanding an apology from Rahman. To defuse the situation, police took Rahman to the immigration point, from where he was sent back to Bangladesh without his son.
Locals ensured Rahman apologised for his remarks before being deported. "A large section of Bangladeshi nationals take India for granted. Had this been any other country, the consequence would have been much more grave," said a local. "Rahman was pushed back to Bangladesh after Mekhliganj PS brought him to us," said Surojit Biswas, an official at the Changrabandha check post.
