123456 Howrah: Clearing of garbage that piled up in Howrah city since Tuesday morning resumed in the evening after a temporary disposal site was identified near Ramrajatala in ward no. 48 of Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC).
Garbage clearance was suspended on Tuesday morning after a decision to stop transportation of further waste to the overburdened Belgachhia dump that had collapsed on Friday afternoon, triggering widespread water supply disruption in Howrah City and had forced many residents living near the dumpsite to vacate their homes.
HMC vice-chairman Debanshu Das said that around 500-550 tonne of waste is generated in Howrah city daily would henceforth be sent to the new dump site identified near the former sewage treatment facility at Dharsa-Arupara.
Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that waste clearance operations would continue late into the night. HMC chairman Sujay Chakraborty said, "For now, garbage will be dumped at Arupara for one and a half to two months, during which a permanent solution will be arranged. Work of removing garbage through bio-mining in Belgachhia has been expedited. Subsequently, a processing plant will be established in Belgachhia."
Around 300 tonne of legacy waste that is being mined at Belgachhia will be transported to Dhapa from next month while the rest will be sent to Baidyabati Municipality.
Additionally, a structural assessment of affected houses in Belgachhia will start on Wednesday. Soil analysis at the disposal site commenced on Tuesday. Chakraborty said appropriate housing arrangements would be provided for Belgachhia's unauthorised residents.
