• Extra ladies’ coaches in Eastern Rly’s Sealdah division local train services

  • 123 Kolkata: Eastern Railway's Sealdah division has added another "ladies' coach" to its suburban services to meet the daily rush of women passengers. The new "ladies' coach" is being introduced in 250 services of the Sealdah division. "Gradually, all services will have three coaches reserved for women instead of two," an ER official said.

The new facility has been incorporated in the 30 new three-phase EMU rakes from Chennai's Integral Coach Factory. There are two women-only coaches in the EMU locals, with the second coach from both ends of a train reserved for women. Now, a part of the third coach (from both ends) of the modern EMU rakes with barriers seperating the general and vendor sections will have women passengers only. "The ‘general' section has been converted into a ‘ladies special'," the official said. "With the growing number of women commuters, the two existing reserved coaches seem inadequate, particularly during peak hours," he added.

"We do run ladies' special trains like Matribhumi local trains, but on an average, 3,000 passengers travel in an EMU rake during rush hours. An added coach will help control overcrowding and allow women to travel with ease," he said.
