• Cops launch app to digitize passport application documents

  • Kolkata: In an effort to stop the use of fake KYC documents, cops will now digitise all documents that a citizen provides for applying for a passport so that cops have a record of data. In addition, ACPs, OCs, and additional OCs will have access to all applications so they can cross-check. The initiative has begun with a trial launch of an app for document verification in Bidhannagar Commissionerate and Howrah Rural Police areas, along with two divisions of Kolkata Police. State cops indicate plans for statewide implementation later.

The move comes in response to a major passport fraud scandal uncovered last Dec and the subsequent charge-sheet against a number of Bangladeshis for fraudulently applying for and obtaining Indian passports.

Under the new system, all passport application documents will be digitally stored on the police server. The app will provide a streamlined interface where applicants can view document requirements, track application status, and receive real-time updates through a secure login system.

"This digital transformation will eliminate confusion about submitted documents and enable better monitoring. The system allows for immediate verification by authorised officers at various levels," said an officer.

The application will feature a direct complaint filing mechanism, connecting applicants with police officials. Once verification is complete, applicants will receive automated status updates through the platform.

State police authorities are confident this digital initiative will significantly reduce passport fraud cases by creating an unalterable record of submitted documents. The system's transparency and accessibility at multiple levels of law enforcement are expected to strengthen the verification process and prevent the use of fraudulent documents in future applications. However, the complete roll-out across Kolkata Police jurisdiction awaits resolution of server-related issues, with authorities working to ensure smooth implementation of this security measure.
