  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday issued a rule for the appearance of the six accused advocates of Basirhat court under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, requiring them to appear before the court on Thursday.

A division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi directed the Basirhat court SP to produce the accused before the court at 10.30 am on Friday.

The division bench issued a rule of contempt against the six accused lawyers who allegedly took away undertrials from the courtroom by raising a ruckus.

"They have gone beyond pardon. One should not share the Bar with such people. They will never realise. They have gone above everything. Have you seen the pen drive?" Justice Basak said to the counsel for the accused.

Counsel for the accused pleaded with the court to have some consideration. "Impose penalty on them. But while doing so, have some considerations," the counsel submitted.

Justice Basak didn't lend an ear to his pleadings. "I am not accepting your appeal. What will I say to the victim families who were involved in the case? Who will hear their prayer? Accused lawyers have to be punished. I will also direct the Bar Council to debar them from the profession for life," Justice Basak said.

The counsel for the accused pleaded with the bench to suspend them but not debar them from practising in court.

"Ask them to surrender their licence to practise in court. The image of the other hardworking lawyers is taking a hit because of the six accused," Justice Basak said.
