  • 12 Kolkata:The maximum temperature on Thursday touched the 35 degree-mark in Kolkata for the third time this summer. At 35.1°C, this was also the second-highest maximum temperature this March. Moreover, Thursday's maximum temperature was 1.2 notches above normal. The maximum temperature could touch the 36-degree mark by Friday and further scale up to 37 by Saturday, Met officials predicted.

Despite no rain forecast for now, the mercury could slide down marginally from Sunday due to a change in wind pattern. The mercury surged to 35.7 °C on March 16, making it the highest temperature this summer. Even as the temperature started retreating from the next day and stayed below the normal mark for the next 13 days, it began to rise above normal from Wednesday.

"The slight fall in temperature from Sunday is unlikely to make much of a difference," said HR Biswas, head of the Weather Forecast Section at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. The minimum temperature also rose slightly in Kolkata. At 25.8°C , it was 1.2 notches above the normal. At present, the city is getting the dry and warm north-westerly wind at the lower level and the low moisture content has turned the weather hotter.

The spells of thunderstorms had caused the day and night temperatures to decline on March 22. The maximum temperature had dropped to 25.5°C , more than nine notches below the normal. The Met office has predicted thundershower activities in some parts of North Bengal.
