Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday set free a Haryana resident, who had surrendered to the CBI in an arms case in Gujarat in 2012 and was later indicted as a "key player" in the abduction of Khadim owner Partha Pratim Roy Burman in 2001.
"There appears no evidence to link up Akhtar alias Akhtar Hossain alias Paloan alias Moulana Hossain with the incident in this case (the abduction) or the arms used. In such view of the facts, we are afraid we are not being able to uphold the conviction of the appellant Akhtar for the offences punishable under Section 364A/342/120B of IPC," said the division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi.
The CID and KP STF indicated they would review the order and decide if they would move the Supreme Court.
Akhtar, who hails from Mewat district of Haryana, was alleged by cops to be part of Aftab Ansari's gang that abducted the shoe baron on July 25, 2001.
