The young participants, aged between 8 and 13, painted off-white tote bags with vibrant depictions of Bengal’s cultural landmarks and the colors of spring. This hands-on activity not only nurtured their artistic skills but also instilled in them the importance of preserving both nature and tradition. “Environment and art can be harmonized through various approaches, including using sustainable materials and creating artworks that raise awareness about ecological issues,” said Babita Das, who guided the children throughout the session.

A key focus of the workshop was the use of eco-friendly art supplies, reinforcing the message of sustainability. Das emphasized that artists can contribute to environmental conservation by opting for natural materials such as sand, leaves, and recycled paper, as well as eco-friendly pigments that reduce environmental impact.

The workshop was hosted at the newly opened outlet of Garden Cafe, a beloved Kolkata institution that has been serving the city since 1968. The latest franchise, located at Somponno Parkomat, Alipore, was launched by founder and owner Sandip Nowlakha. The venue, known for its commitment to quality and innovation, provided a fitting backdrop for the event, with its elegantly designed interiors and air-conditioned seating for 75 guests. Adding to the artistic ambiance, the walls of the cafe are adorned with stunning murals crafted by Babita Das herself.

The event successfully merged art with environmental consciousness, demonstrating how creative platforms can inspire young minds to take up eco-friendly initiatives. By engaging in artistic activities that emphasize sustainability, children not only gain valuable skills but also develop a deeper understanding of their role in protecting the environment.

As Kolkata continues to embrace eco-conscious efforts, initiatives like these highlight the power of art in shaping a greener and more aware generation.
