1234 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar City Police on Friday continued its campaign against illegal parking in Salt Lake, with officers using loudspeakers to warn people that they could face strict action for leaving their vehicles in unauthorised road space and on pavements. In its second day, the drive's primary target were vehicles parked illegally outside commercial establishments and residential houses, areas that drew the most complaints.
"In most cases, we found the garages being used as storage or caretaker rooms. But cars were left outside, on roads. We gave the owners time to move them, and when they didn't comply, we prosecuted them," said a senior Bidhannagar Commissionerate officer.
Police on Friday prosecuted around 70 vehicles. The previous day, they had fined more than 100 car owners for illegal parking. Many of the vehicles, said an officer, encroached on carriageways and pavements.
The crackdown was prompted by complaints by public transport operators about congestions on key Salt Lake roads, including Broadway, First, Second and Third avenues. Six teams of Bidhannagar traffic police, led by DCP (traffic) Nima Norbu Bhutia and DC Bidhannagar Aneesh Sarkar, conducted the drive. "On the first day, we urged drivers to stop illegal parking. We continued to warn violators on Friday. We will impose stricter penalties from next week," an officer said. Errant motorists were booked under Motor Vehicles Act sections 122 and 177, with fines of Rs 500.
