Drunken rogue bikers race on Jessore Road in West Bengal, kill woman

KOLKATA: Drunken rogue bikers racing along Jessore Road in Barasat on Thursday night claimed the life of a woman in her mid-50s after a speeding bike hit her.
Local residents chased down one of the accused biker, thrashed him, and handed him over to the police.
Thursday's accident took place around 9.30 pm, when the deceased, Asima Das, a resident of Mandalgachhi in Duttapukur, was on her way to visit a relative's house in Noapara. The severely injured woman was immediately taken to Barasat Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The incident turned Barasat's Noapara area into a virtual battleground. When the police arrived at the scene, they faced protests by the enraged locals, demanding an immediate crackdown on bike racing.
They even attempted to set fire to bikes, leading to clashes with the police. Eventually, a large contingent of police, including RAF and Combat Force, arrived and assured the agitators of prompt action.
