Kolkata Police arrested a man from Narkeldanga for uploading child pornography on social media, following a tip-off from Facebook. The suspect is in custody until April 4. KOLKATA: The Kolkata Police cyber cell has arrested a man from Narkeldanga for allegedly uploading child pornography on social media. The initial tip-off about the content came directly from Facebook, claimed sources. The cops have registered a Pocso case.
The cops believe that the victim might be from the city. Court sources said the judge allowed to record the statement of the child.
The man was arrested on Thursday and is in police custody till April 4. Cops said more arrests are likely as it appears that there is an organised gang behind this. Law states that keeping pornographic content on a mobile phone, computer, or any electronic device is a punishable offence. "In this case, the accused kept the objectionable content on his mobile phone. It has been seized and sent to a forensic lab. We are ascertaining who created this content," said a senior police officer.
The cops stated that the video showed a minor, aged 12 years, being stripped and filmed. "We got the tip-off on Tuesday. More arrests are likely," said an officer. While sources said the Facebook authorities flagged it, an international NGO working against child porn and tied with FB traced the IP address to Bengal. The CID was notified, who in turn, alerted Lalbazar. Kolkata Police, though, stated that they were tipped by "those who act as watchdogs of such content".
The Cyber Cell has formed a special investigation team to probe deeper into the possible existence of a larger network. Police have also reached out to cyber experts to analyse the digital footprint of the accused.
