Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation to install 4,500 LED streetlights across Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur

Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated the process to install over 4,500 LED streetlights across its 41 wards, covering Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur. Close to Rs 4 crore has been sanctioned under the state's green city mission scheme for the project.
As per the plan, 405 LEDs of 90-watt, costing about Rs 1.6 crore, and 4,060 of 45 and 60-watt capacities, priced at Rs 2 crore, will be installed on new steel poles.
Besides, another 50 LED lights of 120 watt will be installed along VIP Road on the stretch from Dum Dum Park to Narayantala. For this, another Rs 18.1 lakh has been estimated.
Inadequate and poorly maintained streetlights along several stretches of Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur have been a matter of concern for the civic authorities. Local residents have aired their grievances regarding poorly lit roads on several occasions. It was noticed that some stretches in Salt Lake plunge into darkness at night, with the streetlights either lying defunct or not functioning properly. "In some places, the streetlights are so dim that the light does not reach the ground and the roads remain mostly dark," said Shankhadeep Roy, a resident of Salt Lake AE block.
The civic body had increased budgetary allocations for streetlight installation, repair, and maintenance this year. While power is supplied by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL), BMC is responsible for maintaining the lighting system along with the poles. Officials said that there were standing instructions to the agency responsible for maintenance of the streetlights to regularly carry out checks to see whether streetlights are in proper condition.
