  • Kolkata: A Mumbai cyber cell team, with the help of local police, raided an office on Shakespeare Sarani on Friday and nabbed a ‘digital arrest' kingpin, who operated from there.

The accused, Sourish Nag (41), was picked up for receiving Rs 1.4 crore from a digital arrest fraud case in Mumbai. Cops suspect this is directly linked to a bigger Rs 20-crore digital arrest fraud committed in south Mumbai recently. The Mumbai cyber cell also arrested another accused, Bapi Das (35), from Bengal in connection to the fraud that targeted an 86-year-old woman from south Mumbai.

The investigation revealed a complex money laundering operation, spanning Maharashtra, Assam and Bengal, with the fraudsters employing a sophisticated network of at least 13 bank accounts to channel the stolen funds.

Police confirmed that the scammed amount was distributed, with Rs 38 lakh going to Das's account and Rs 1.4 crore to Nag. The breakthrough came when the cyber cops conducted operations in Ranaghat in Nadia, resulting in the arrest of Bapi. Both suspects admitted to receivingcommissions for allowing their bank accounts to be used.
