Kolkata: The police, rattled by the series of suicide pacts in the city, have decided to tie up with NGOs and offer a helping hand to those in mental distress. At least five major incidents have claimed 12 lives in recent times.
"Kolkata Police are committed to mental wellbeing. We are here to listen, support, and assist those in crisis. If you, or someone you know, is struggling, reach out. Dial ‘Tele Manas' Helpline at 14416 or visit the nearest police station for help," said the police on social media on Saturday.
Since 2022, Kolkata Police had started providing helpline numbers on Facebook and Twitter, asking people to call those who are going through any form of depression for counselling. But these were 12-hour services.
Now, this will be a 24-hour service, said Lalbazar sources.
A member of the Indian Psychiatric Society lauded the effort and said "gatekeepers" or people trained to identify someone contemplating suicide are necessary. "Anyone from teachers, emergency health care providers, community leaders, police officers, and even religious leaders can play the role. The idea is to recognise the signs and refer the individual to a psychiatrist or a counsellor," added the member.
Psychiatrist J Ram has often pointed out that busy, urban life was leading to a disconnect and isolation that often led to suicidal tendencies. "Many youngsters are under tremendous pressure to perform. Unfortunately, it is the parents who are often responsible for this. 3What they don't realise is that education has nothing to do with doing well in exams. Youngsters, on the other hand, are eager for quick success and fail to handle failures," said Ram recently.
