• 1°C max drop fails to bring down degree of discomfort

  • 12 Kolkata: The maximum temperature on Saturday dipped by a notch in Kolkata from Friday's high of 37.6°C. Despite the marginal dip, there is no immediate respite from the unrelenting heat. Even as the Met office has forecast a gradual mercury dip in the next two to three days, it is unlikely to slip below the normal mark. At 36.6°C, the maximum temperature was a degree above the normal mark on Saturday.

In fact, the weather officer has warned of the possibility of a heat wave condition on Sunday in a few isolated pockets in neighbouring North and South 24 Parganas, West Midnapore and West Burdwan. Even if Kolkata escapes the heat wave, the heated pockets in the neighbouring districts could have an impact on the city as well. The Met office said there was no rain respite for now.

"We can expect a gradual dip in the mercury in the next two to three days, and the maximum temperature could touch around 35°C by Monday, which is around the normal mark. In that case, the heat condition will become slightly better and bearable," said HR Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

According to the Met office, a change in wind pattern will arrest the mercury from rising further, but at present, there is no system that would bring thundershower spells that could push the mercury down significantly.

The mercury was on the rise from last Sunday, touching 37.6°C in Kolkata on Friday, making it the warmest day this summer. At nearly three notches above the normal mark, it was also the second-highest March maximum temperature in the past 11 years in Kolkata.

Besides Kolkata, the mercury in neighbouring Dum Dum and Salt Lake retreated slightly on Saturday. The maximum temperature that touched 40°C in Dum Dum on Friday scaled down to 37.6°C on Saturday, while in Salt Lake, it came down to 38°C from 39.7°C the previous day.
