  • Jalpaiguri: A Jalpaiguri court on Saturday awarded the death sentence to a man for killing his cousin four years ago.

Sankar Das was hacked to death by his cousin, Suresh Roy, on March 4, 2021 for objecting to the latter's habit of taunting women in the Shanti Nagar area.

Das was having tea at a stall when Roy stabbed him 18 times, killing him on the spot, in the presence of numerous witnesses. The murder triggered massive outrage in the area, with people holding rallies demanding the death penalty.

A few men from Shanti Nagar were present at the court premises on Saturday with banners against Roy. They expressed satisfaction at the verdict.

"The crime was committed in broad daylight. After listening to 12 witnesses over the past four years, the court gave its judgment," said public prosecutor Subhankar Chanda.

Another Jalpaiguri court sentenced a 70-year-old man to life imprisonment for hacking his wife to death. Santosh Das, a resident of Panda Para in Jalpaiguri, killed his wife over suspected adultery in Oct 2017 and then surrendered at Kotwali police station.
