  • 12 Kolkata: The Bengal Congress on Sunday stated that chief minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks in Oxford regarding India's economy are accurate and regardless of whether they are made in India or the UK, the truth remains unchanged.

The BJP criticised the CM, alleging that she contradicted PM Narendra Modi's assertion in Oxford that India would become an economic superpower by 2060.

Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said, "If any leader raises the right questions, whether in India or abroad, they should not be discredited. If the leader is speaking the truth, it remains the truth, irrespective of their location."

While the BJP denounced Banerjee's statements during the discussion, Sarkar maintained that the Congress does not believe her remarks were incorrect. "Unemployment is the highest in the last four and a half decades. People are depending on the PDS system now. There is nothing to hide about the dismal economic condition of India. The share market is going through doldrums and the Rupee is being devalued. Everything is known to everyone and there is no reason why one should not ask questions," Sarkar said.

Sarkar's stance contrasts with that of his predecessor and former MP Adhir Chowdhury, who argued that such remarks would not help foster confidence among foreign investors regarding the state's investment climate.
