  • Amid tension in Mothabari in Malda, the West Bengal Police on Saturday urged people to not pay heed to rumours and incitement on social media, and warned “miscreants” against trying to create trouble during the upcoming Eid and Ram Navami festivals.

“We will ask people to inform us if they get any information about any suspicious activities. They can dial 100 or approach the local police station. We will have full security arrangements for the festivities, and we want people to enjoy during that time. Inter-community meetings have been held, and police will be deployed in large numbers on the streets during the festive days,” ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim said at a press conference.

Meanwhile, police registered an FIR in Shyampur, Howrah, against individuals allegedly plotting to create trouble during the festive season. “We have registered a case against some miscreants who planned to create enmity between the communities in Shyampur,” added Shamim.

ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar said, “We have learnt that some miscreants are planning to create trouble. We have initiated an investigation.”

A case has been registered under BNS sections 196(1), 299, 69 (2), which relates to speech and actions promoting religious enmity, deliberately outrage religious feelings and criminal conspiracy.

“However, the case is sensitive. So, we are not divulging anything else. We will investigate and find out whether there is a larger conspiracy to spread communal tension,” added Shamim.

“We have alerted our intelligence wings. We are keeping vigil in social media posts. We also ask people not to pay heed to malicious social media posts,” added Shamim.
