‘Spurious meds being sent to Bengal from other states’

Kolkata: The Bengal govt, probing the recent cases of spurious medicines, wrote to state govts, including Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, seeking details about alleged fake medicine manufacturing rackets there.
The state health department, during searches in the last few weeks, came across wholesalers who claimed to have procured medicines from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. A large portion of sub-standard medicines also comes to Bengal from Haryana. These states, wholesalers said, have facilities to produce spurious and counterfeit drugs, which are mostly manufactured in Baddi and Solan-based companies.
The state govt, which is trying to reach the root of the racket selling spurious and sub-standard medicines, is trying to know the extent of the fake medicine racket in these states.
During raids at Howrah and at Mehta Building in Kolkata, officers from the Directorate of Drugs Control also learned that some suppliers from Mumbai have been sending spurious medicines to retailers in Bengal.
