  • 123 Kolkata: A man from Tamil Nadu, Murugesh Subramani, with hearing and speech disabilities was reunited with his family by Bidhannagar Police after a week's effort on Sunday.

Police said Subramani went missing in Kolkata after leaving his home in Tamil Nadu following a dispute with his wife and parents. He was first found by locals roaming the streets of Bidhannagar on March 25, who called local cops. The police were on high alert about outsiders' movements due to the conglomeration of multiple festivals over the week. He was successfully reunited with his family on Sunday at a destitute home.

"Some local residents at the Nayapatti market area in Bidhannagar spotted him roaming aimlessly. We found out the man was deaf and mute andtook permission from a local court to keep him at a secure shelter. Ee kept on searching for his family and contacted all local police stations about missing persons," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar city police.

With the assistance of a specialised sign language interpreter, cops finally managed to retrieve a phone number belonging to his family in Tamil Nadu. "We managed to contact his family, and they confirmed that he was missing and his description matched with the missing person," said the officer.

On Sunday, his wife and mother travelled to Kolkata and arrived at the Electronic Complex Police Station, where, following all legal procedures, the man was formally handed over to them. "The reunion marked the conclusion of a coordinated effort by Bidhannagar Police and specialised agencies who helped us with the sign language interpreter to ensure his safety and return home," the officer added.
