123 Kolkata: A 28-year-old newly-wed woman, Pooja Singh, who got married just around 40 days ago, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom at her in-laws' home in Behala Pathakpara early on Sunday, shortly after she had a video call with her husband, with whom she had a heated argument.
According to sources from Lalbazar, Pooja and her husband, Mukesh Singh, an IT professional, were engaged in a tense conversation on Saturday night, following which the husband left the house.
Pooja allegedly made a video call to him and had another round of argument before she locked herself in a room on the ground floor of their two-storey house on Pathakpara Road. When repeated knocking yielded no response, family members, including mother-in-law Manju Singh, forcibly opened the door and discovered her hanging from the ceiling fan.
She was immediately rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Cops from the Parnashree police station registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. Officials are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death.
No suicide note was found at the scene, and authorities are examining Pooja's mobile phone for clues. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the suicide was likely triggered by the argument with her husband. However, investigators are also exploring other possible factors, including her family's statements and neighbourhood accounts.
Neighbours reported that Pooja and Mukesh frequently had late-night disputes since their wedding. An official from Kolkata Police said, "So far, no reasons other than the argument have emerged, but we are considering all possible angles."
Pooja, originally from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Kolkata after her marriage to Mukesh. While her family has not yet filed any formal complaint, police continue to probe the circumstances surrounding her death.
