Hirapur: Two labourers suffocated to death while working inside a water reservoir at a house in West Burdwan's Hirapur on Monday morning. The deceased were Anil Singh (50) of Linepar and Munna Yadav (48) of Shyambandh. Locals said one of the workers lost consciousness while working in the tank. When the other went in to rescue him, he too fainted.
Emergency response teams brought them out and rushed them to Asansol District Hospital. However, medical officers declared them brought dead. The bodies were sent for autopsy.
Dr Debasish Sarkar, ward 84 councillor and borough chairman of Asansol Municipal Corporation, said the civic body would investigate the incident. He said the reservoir had approximately a foot of water. Police have registered a case of unnatural death. Meanwhile, the victims' family members have demanded compensation from the authorities.
