• Don’t dump waste on vacant plots, warns BMC

  • 12 Kolkata: In order to prevent dumping of waste on vacant plots and other roadside corners in Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install display boards pointing out that the plots are not garbage dumpsites. This will be done at all unauthorised waste-vulnerable points across all 41 wards.

Officials said that it was noticed that waste is often thrown on roadside corners and vacant plots. "The aim is to prevent this practice. The waste collecting teams remain busy disposing the daily collected waste from the authorised dump sites across the township. On top of this, it is not possible for them to identify and collect waste from unauthorised dumping places," said an official.

Officials said that the display boards will be 3 ft by 2 ft in size, and will be placed on a pole at all the sites where people dump waste. The boards will caution the citizens and advise them to not dump waste at the place. The boards will also state that indiscriminate throwing of waste in that area may attract penal action.

BMC is also in the process of procuring GPS-enabled waste collecting dumpers to keep a constant check on daily waste collection and disposal activities. "These waste collecting dumpers will be GPS-enabled so that they can be tracked centrally from the civic body's control room. This will ensure that the waste collecting trucks are regularly collecting the daily generated garbage from the authorised dumping spots and transporting it to the Dhapa dump ground," said an official.

In the long run, BMC is working on plans to do away with roadside waste bins and introduce hydraulic compactor dumpers and hook loaders, which will be stationed at specific points across its 41 wards. Presently, about 450 tonnes of waste is generated daily from the entire BMC area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur.

Previously, the state urban development department put up notice boards on several vacant plots across Salt Lake to prevent unauthorised encroachment.
