Kolkata: Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested for allegedly killing a 45-year-old toto driver in New Town by smashing his skull with a brick, slitting his throat, and slashing his genitals on Monday.
Cops suspect victim Sushanta Ghosh used to harass a teenage girl, who happened to be the girlfriend of one of the two accused. This led the youths to plot the murder.
"As of now, it looks like a planned murder. One of the two boys contacted Ghosh and booked a late-night ride. While he was transporting the duo, they attacked him from behind near Akankha crossing," said an officer.
Police said Ghosh developed an extramarital relationship with the wife of a friend in his neighbourhood. Ghosh also financially assisted his friend in buying a rickshaw. Following a family dispute, the friend moved from Rekjoani to New Town, where Ghosh continued to visit. Ghosh also allegedly made advances towards the friend's minor daughter. The girl told her boyfriend, a 16-year-old school student, one of the accused.
On Monday, a morning walker noticed an empty toto parked by the roadside and, a little further away, a body lying in a pool of blood. He informed Eco Park police station.
Following a complaint by Ghosh's father, cops picked up the friend and his wife on suspicion of the murder. But after a thorough investigation and scanning CCTV footage, the two youths were picked up and the couple was released.
"The two teenagers confessed to the murder and said they mutilated him as revenge for his immoral behaviour," an officer said.
