Kolkata: Danseuse Dona Ganguly has filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police cyber cell against a female YouTuber for allegedly spreading defamatory content about her family on social media.
The complaint, lodged late last week, challenges the credibility of claims made by a self-proclaimed social media influencer from Kolkata who claimed to be a neighbour of the Gangulys, staying "barely 3-4 minutes" from their residence.
According to police sources, the YouTuber made several allegations against the family of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The post included claims about the family's alleged negligence toward an ailing vegetable vendor and featured photographs of their residence and a vehicle.
"The vehicle shown has a ‘Govt of West Bengal' sticker. It was claimed that Dona moves around in this SUV. We want to clarify that no such SUV is used by anyone in the locality," said a spokesperson on behalf of Dona. The danseuse, who accompanied chief minister Mamata Banerjee to Oxford in the UK recently, maintained that these posts were deliberately crafted to tarnish their reputation.
While the YouTuber removed the controversial post, she claimed receiving threats following her social media activity. However, no counter-complaint was filed with the police regarding these alleged threats.
The Kolkata Police cyber cell has started an investigation into the matter.
