123 Kolkata: A man in his 20s was held for questioning by cops after he was found sitting next to his girlfriend's body in her flat at Deshbandhu Nagar in Baguiati on Tuesday. He claimed the woman, Manisha Roy, had hung herself from a ceiling fan, and he tried to save her by pulling her down.
Manisha, who lived alone in a rented apartment, was a dancer. She apparently worked at a bar in Bhubaneswar and recently returned to her apartment. She was celebrating her birthday with a male friend on Monday night at the flat, police said.
According to cops, on Tuesday, neighbours called the cops, alerting them to strange noises like repeated banging on the door and shouting from the flat. When cops knocked on the flat, no one opened the door. Cops broke open the door to find Antrayami Sain sitting next to Manisha's body in her bedroom. The door of the bedroom was also broken.
"Sain claimed they were partying last night when they had a dispute over an issue, and she went inside and locked herself in her bedroom. The man claimed he fell asleep in the drawing room, and when he woke up, he knocked on the bedroom door, which was locked from inside. He said he broke the door to enter the room, found her hanging, and pulled her down to find her dead," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar police.
"There were clear marks of injuries around her neck. We are investigating if it was a murder by strangulation or something else. The body has been sent for an autopsy," the officer added.
